Are Sri Lankan jungle snakes dangerous to average tourists?

While Sri Lanka is home to extremely venomous snakes, they are rarely dangerous to the typical tourist. Snakes actively avoid any close human interaction and usually keep themselves out of sight, deep within dense undergrowth or in agricultural plots.

Incidents of snakebites mostly impact local farmers working barefoot in fields or tangled brush. If you are visiting as a tourist and you stick to the marked hiking paths, national parks, and coastal resorts, your odds of seeing a dangerous species such as a Russell’s Viper or an Indian Cobra are extremely low. Just wearing closed-toe shoes while going through the jungle hikes gives enough protection.
