Check in to a nature lodge or campsite. In the evening, walk up to the Riverston Transmission Tower (Gap) to experience the strong winds and see the spectacular view of the Knuckles range covered in mist. Overnight in Riverston.
The Mini World’s End & Hidden Falls Route
Route: Riverston ➔ Pitawala Pathana ➔ Sera EllaMorning trek to Pitawala Pathana, a unique flat grassland on top of a mountain that ends in a terrifying sheer drop (Mini World’s End). Afterwards, hike down to Sera Ella, a beautiful waterfall where you can sit on rock seats inside a cool cave behind the water curtain. Enjoy a bath in the natural rock pools. Overnight in Riverston.
The Lake in the Clouds Route
Route: Riverston ➔ Sembuwatta ➔ ElkaduwaDrive through scenic tea estates to reach Sembuwatta Lake, a paradise hidden among pine forests and tea gardens. You can walk around the lake or swim in the natural spring water pool. Later, proceed to Elkaduwa for a quiet night surrounded by nature. Overnight in Elkaduwa.
The Challenging Climb Route
Route: Elkaduwa ➔ Matale ➔ PidurangalaTravel down from the hills towards the cultural triangle. In the late afternoon, start the hike up Pidurangala Rock. Unlike Sigiriya, this is an adventurous climb that involves scrambling over boulders at the top. Frequent Questions
How difficult are the hikes?
The hikes in Pitawala Pathana and Sembuwatta are easy to moderate. However, the final part of Pidurangala Rock requires some physical effort to climb over boulders. It is suitable for anyone with average fitness.
Are there leeches?
Yes, since Riverston and Knuckles are wet forest areas, leeches can be present, especially after rain. We recommend wearing leech socks or using citronella oil/balm.
What is special about Sera Ella?
Most waterfalls can only be viewed from the front. Sera Ella is special because it has a rock cave behind the waterfall. You can safely sit inside the cave while the water falls in front of you—a very rare experience.
Why choose Riverston over Nuwara Eliya?
Nuwara Eliya is more “colonial” and developed. Riverston is raw, untouched, and much less crowded. It offers a true “wilderness” feeling that you don’t get in busy tourist towns.
Is swimming safe?
Swimming is safe in the designated pool area at Sembuwatta Lake and the shallow pools of Sera Ella (depending on water levels). Always listen to your guide before entering the water.
What should we pack?
Good hiking shoes with grip, a rain jacket (weather changes fast), comfortable trousers for trekking, insect repellent, and a sweater for cold nights.
